Foreign territories within China – the safest places for Chinese people for over 100 years
It is not surprising that foreign territories protected by international laws within a country under a totalitarian government are the desirable destinies for people seeking protection of their lives. This is very much true for China.
- 1898 – Kang Youwei (康有为) the prominent reformer of the late Qing Dynasty sought protection in a British Consulate which helped him escape to Canada when Dowager Empress (Cixi) ordered him executed through slow slicing.
- 1927 - Li Daozhao (李大釗),one of the two co-founders of the Chinese Communist Party, sought protection in the Soviet Union embassy when warlord Zhang Zuolin was trying to arrest him.
- 1936 – Between 200,000 – 250,000 Chinese people were rescued by the safety zone under foreigners in Nanjing during the Nanjing Massacre.
- 1946 – Nine professors including an underground CCP member sought protection in the US Consulate in Kunming after Li Gonpu (李公朴) and Wen Yiduo (闻一多) were assassinated by the Nationalist’s secret agents.
- 1989 – Prof. Lizhi Fang sought protection in the US embassy from the prosecution of the CCP.
- 2012 – Wang Lijun (王立軍), the police chief of Chongqing, sought protection at the US Consulate General in Chengdu. Blind human rights activist Chen Guancheng (陈光诚) sought protection in the US embassy.
The day will come when Chinese people will be adequately protected by their own government.
